ANGEL INVESTORS

Angel investors are investors, often retired entrepreneurs or executives, who may be interested in angel investing for reasons that go beyond pure monetary return. These include wanting to keep abreast of current developments in a particular business arena, mentoring another generation of entrepreneurs, and making use of their experience and networks on a less than full-time basis. Thus, in addition to funds, angel investors can often provide valuable management advice and important contacts.

THE DOMAIN OF STRATEGY ~ DR. JIMOH IBRAHIM, CFR

Barrister Dr. Jimoh Ibrahim, CFR
The domain of strategy is the corporation or the organisation. This is what I call the ‘centre of activities.’ This can involve the whole company or any part thereof, particularly in the case of specific restructuring, which may relate to marketing, operations, research and customer loyalty. It is taken for granted, as a general rule, that the organisation provides the general direction in the form of vision, mission, goals, objectives and broad course of action on specific terms of engagement.

CBN INTRODUCES GREATER FLEXIBILITY IN FOREX

CHARMING GRANDMOTHER AND GRANDSON

FOR A REALISTIC NAIRA EXCHANGE RATE

At its March 21-22, 2016 meeting, the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) “charged the apex bank to speed up the comprehensive reform of the foreign exchange market which is currently being undertaken” with a view to stemming speculative demand, maintaining a stable naira exchange rate, dousing inflation induced by exchange rate pass through and tackling bank aversion to financing the real sector, among other negative economic features. Although the contents of the awaited reform were still unknown and while the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) continues to observe a naira exchange rate of N197/US$1, the Vice President and Chairman of the National Economic Council, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, on May 13, 2016 issued a statement which read in part, “We realised that we were left with only one option. This was to allow independent marketers and any Nigerian entity to source their own foreign exchange and import fuel. We expect that foreign exchange will be sourced at an average of about N285 to the dollar (current interbank rate).”

PUBLIC OFFICERS AND THEIR ILL-GOTTEN WEALTH

Professor Yemi Osibanjo
When Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, publicly declared the other day that henceforth, public officers must account for what they own, his words were inspiring enough and they illustrated how government can trigger hope in a people who have been long traumatised by corruption in high places.

THE GENERAL AS STRATEGIST ~ DR. JIMOH IBRAHIM, CFR

Barrister Dr. Jimoh Ibrahim, CFR
There are many roles for the ‘General as a Strategist’ in navigating organisational strategic road maps. The issue of general supervision cannot be taken for granted. It looks like the general will play the role of control tower for the other drivers of the strategy to navigate safely.

WHICH CRIME DID CBN GOVERNOR, GODWIN EMEFIELE, COMMIT?

Godwin Emefiele, CBN Governor
Let us assume we do not like Mr. Godwin Emefiele, the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Let us also assume that we believe every public officer in Nigeria deserves nothing but abuse, name-calling and scandalmongering. Let us then say that by default, We are happy that Mr. Emefiele has been under severe media attacks since President Muhammadu Buhari assumed office on May 29th, 2015. The simple conclusion we would have reached by now is that there is more to what we are reading. It would no longer matter if we like Mr. Emefiele or not. We would now be getting concerned that some people are hell bent on getting rid of the CBN governor. We would now be asking ourselves if there is something else behind the anti-Emefiele emotions.

AVOIDING UPCOMING CONTROVERSIAL BUDGETS

THE NEED FOR A VIABLE WASTE MANAGEMENT

Waste management in all societies is as important as any other aspect of management because waste hazards can be devastating if defectively managed, chiefly in the thickly populated urban areas. Sad enough, most metropolis in Nigeria remain an eyesore because of the heaps of waste scattered on streets, roads, seashores and water channels. Many notable locations in Lagos, Ibadan, Benin, Ilorin, Kaduna, Port Harcourt, Owerri, just to mention but a few, remain filthily rich with atmosphere that is never depleted of horrid odour. These wastes include solid and gaseous gases which may be toxic, poisonous or radioactive.

MERGER OF MINISTRIES, DEPARTMENTS AND AGENCIES (MDAS)

President Muhammadu Buhari
It is unfortunate that a simple policy initiative, merger of ministries and agencies of government for ease of bureaucratic business by the one-year-old Muhammadu Buhari administration remains inconclusive till date.

FG NEEDS ABOUT N2 TRILLION TO COMPLETE 226 ON-GOING ROAD PROJECTS ~ FASHOLA

Barrister Babatunde Fashola, SAN
Given the scale of the challenges facing Nigeria over infrastructure and Barrister Babatunde Fashola’s unique position in which he has been saddled with fixing it on the three most critical fronts, it is understandable if the Minister of Power, Works and Housing sometimes seems overwhelmed. When he said at a town hall meeting in Lagos the other day that the Federal Government needs about N2.0 trillion to complete no fewer than 226 on-going road projects across the country, he sounded just as exasperated as he did in an earlier statement during one of the 2016 budget defence sessions, that the government was indebted to road contractors to the tune of N1.0 trillion, in respect of over 200 on-going road projects in the country. There is so much to do but so little money available for the task.

DILMA ROUSSEFF: LESSONS FROM BRAZIL

Dilma Rousseff, President of Brasil
The on-going political development in Brazil in which the lower house of the country’s bi-cameral legislature has voted in favour of impeachment of the country’s President, Dilma Rousseff, is at once a sad saga but a savoury tribute to democracy.

LESSON FROM PLAN TO DIVERSIFY SAUDI ARABIA’S ECONOMY

President of Saudi Arabia
The plan by Saudi Arabia, to move beyond a mono-product, oil-dependent economy and diversify its base can only be a good, forward- thinking step for that country. And it is, for Nigeria, food for thought as well as a clarion call on Africa’s giant to move much more quickly in a similar direction.

TRUMP AND THE RISE OF THE ‘UGLY AMERICAN’

Donald Trump
As the United States confronts the spectra of another bruising Presidential election this year, the emerging contenders have initiated acrimonious primary contests for the tickets of the two major parties. On the Republican side, the emergence of Donald Trump, real estate tycoon and TV reality show host, has surprised the “grand old party’s (GOP’s)” establishment with the vehemence and durability of his supporters and the extent of his popularity. On the Democratic side what was touted as a free, and almost uncontested, run at the nomination by Hilary Clinton, former first lady and Barack Obama’s lately embattled Secretary of State, has been interrupted by a robust challenge from a relatively unknown fringe radical Senator Bernie Sanders.
