WHAT IS INFERTILITY?

      Infertility simply means inability to get pregnant after 9-12 months of unprotected intercourse.

      Up to 1 in 6 to7 couples have problems conceiving and any of these seek medical advice and treatment.

      Some patients will need only advice or reassurance others may need drug therapy or surgery.

      Some however will require assisted conception technique like in-vitro fertilization (IVF) or intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) to achieve pregnancy.

WHAT HELP IS AVAILABLE?

      Almost all couples with infertility of greater than 3 years duration will require assisted reproductive techniques. Examples of these are: IVF, GIFT, ZIFT, ICSI, etc

      I these procedures, the woman is given drugs to stimulate the ovaries to produce a number of eggs (10-16). These eggs are collected by ultrasound scan-directed follicular aspiration.

      The eggs are then placed in close contact with the sperm (IVF) or injected (ICSI) to generate embryos.

      The resulting embryos (maximum of 3) are then transferred into the uterus and pregnancy allowed to begin.

WHO NEEDS IVF/ICSI

      Couples that will benefit from assisted reproductive technology include those with:

      Bilateral tubal blockade/absence or unilateral blockade with more than 3 years sub-fertility.

      Azospermia (no sperm in the ejaculate) or Oligospermia with more than 3 years sub-fertility.

      An ovulation unresponsive to at least 1 year of ovulation induction therapy.

      Unexplained infertility for more than 3 years.

      Older woman who require treatment with donated eggs.

NOTE

      Pregnancy rates are better the younger the couples are.

      So, delay is undesirable.
