The Executive
Chairman of Tectono Group, Chief Ugwokeh
Nnaemeka, has threatened to phase out OPay and other digital payment
companies operating in Nigeria for their incompetence.
The Tectono boss made this known on a post
on his Facebook fan page where he wrote, “The need to
phase out all the contemporary digital payment companies in Nigeria can never
be over-emphasized.
“It has become paramount, in view of the magnitude of pain-points of
users which snowball in a geometrical progression on a daily basis. This phase-out
has been perfected by me and my team. We are contemporarily awaiting
implementation.”
The Okemmadu of Kabong, as Chief Nnaemeka
is called, shared his case of declined transaction using an OPay POS after he
was debited.
“On May 17, 2023, I became a victim of OPay. On that day, I was at a
certain place in Lagos where no ATM was domiciled and I wanted to pay somebody
via online transfer. My phone was having
some issues at that point in time. I couldn't use it. Luckily, I had my Guaranty Trust Bank ATM
card. I decided to quickly use it to make a transfer via #Opay #POS.
“The transaction failed, but I got debited. With the help of the POS
operator, OPay was contacted and they said that the transaction would be
reversed within 24 hours. It is now almost 48 hours and I am yet to get my
money back.
“I contacted #GTBank and they confirmed that the money had been
taken from my account by OPay which doesn't want to reverse it.
“I am giving Opay the maximum of 24 hours to give me back my money
or I sue them. This has been happening to a lot of Nigerians who do not have
strong voice to lodge their complaints,” he wrote.
The celebrity
businessman and influencer revealed the plan of his company to take over the
entire market share of digital payment business in Nigeria and force OPay and
others out of business.
“We are coming up with a disruptive FinTech innovation that will
make Nigerians to withdraw their money any time without any case of failed
transactions after debiting customers.
“Nigerians are oblivious of the fact that payment can be made via
POS offline.
