Rt. Hon. Chief Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Enugu State Governor |
Report reaching
us has it that the Governor of Enugu State, Rt. Hon. Chief Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, at the conference yesterday,
called on quantity surveyors to design a cost management strategy to reduce the
costs of infrastructure provision without compromising standards. According to
Gburugburu, as the governor is fondly called, the strategy has become vital owing
to the fact that any amount of money saved in this process can be channeled to
tackle the challenges in other areas.
In Gburugburu’s
own words: “This workshop is indeed apt and timely,
especially as it is coming at this point when the need to drive economic expansion
in the country through infrastructural development has become even more
imperative. I am confident that with the calibre of experts and resource
persons assembled and with the topics to be treated, participants will go away
richer in knowledge and understanding of the contemporary issues and
developments in the industry.”
Governor
Ugwuanyi, who is the immediate past Chairman of House of Representatives
Committee on Marine Transport, also asked the participants to address the bothersome
and persistent issues of falling standards, ethical breaches and quackery in
the relevant professions.
In his own
speech, the President of the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors, Malam Murtala Aliyu, enjoined the state
governments in the South East geopolitical zone to patronise the services of
the quantity surveyors in the zone for cost-effectiveness. He expressed his
displeasure over the fact that Enugu had not employed the services of quantity
surveyors in its infrastructure development, adding that the workshop was meant
to address the attendant corruption in the provision of infrastructure through
efficient measurement and cost management.
