NIGERIA’S PETROLEUM INDUSTRY OF THE FUTURE

That the Nigerian petroleum (oil and gas) industry operates under out-dated legal, regulatory and institutional structures is not in doubt. And this is a disservice to the country. Following attempts to reform the sector that reach back to 2001, a comprehensive Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) was forwarded to the Sixth National Assembly for enactment into law. But opposition to its fiscal provisions (that raised the takings of the country) by international oil companies and disapproval (by legislators from a section of the country) of recommendations in favour of host communities stalled the passage of the Bill in both the Sixth and Seventh Sessions of the National Assembly. However, professing “extensive discussions, collaboration and the participation of all stakeholders that began in mid-August 2015”, the Eighth Senate opted to enact, piecemeal, laws to deal with separate aspects of the petroleum industry as a replacement of the PIB.

A few days ago, estate surveyors gathered in Imo State for their 47th annual conference, to acquaint the government and public with the peculiar roles of the profession in the economic development of the country. The Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers (NIESV) president, Dr. Bolarinde Patunola-Ajayi, speaks on how it plans to expand its contribution to the society in terms of housing, research and education.

NON-OIL SECTOR AS A GAME CHANGER IN NIGERIA

Nigeria’s export trade in the 1960s was fuelled by the agro-industry and constituted mainly of cocoa, groundnuts, rubber, palm oil, palm kernel, beniseed and copra. Nigeria also exported tin ore and columbite. Then agricultural exports were practically the country’s main sources of foreign exchange with the nation being a major exporter of the aforementioned produce. The agricultural sector was the bedrock of the nation’s economic growth and development at that time. There was also heavy dependence on revenue from taxes on those exports by government.

NIGERIA’S REAL ESTATE SECTOR TO GROW BY 5.39%, SAYS CROMWELL PROFESSIONAL SERVICES INTERNATIONAL

Notwithstanding the negative growth recorded in 2016, the real estate sector is expected to grow at an average rate of 5.39 per cent between 2017 and 2020. The growth, experts said, would however depend on the supports from private and public investments, agricultural revolution, favourable oil prices, increase in volume of oil production and capable political leadership.
