The Nigerian equity market closed today's trading session with a contraction, declining by 33bps as the NGX-ASI closed at 49,026.62 points. Consequently, the Year-To-Date (YTD) return of the market weakened to 14.8% from 15.2% the previous trading day.

THE PROJECTION FOR Q3 COMPANY INCOME TAX (CIT) HAS SURGED FURTHER, WITH Q2 ESTIMATING A 29.53% INCREASE IN 2022

According to a survey carried out by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) for Company Income Tax (CIT) at the end of the second quarter of 2022 in Nigeria, at the end of Q2 2022, the CIT has been shared amongst 21 industries or activities (locally) which earned N634.0bn, and foreign income payment earned N80.4bn which summed up to a total CIT of N714.4bn. On a quarterly basis, the local CIT payment grew to 203.2% from N209.1bn in Q1 2022, meanwhile the foreign CIT payment amounted to N80.4bn, declining by 76.5% from N342.4bn in Q1 2022. The total CIT payment in Nigeria increased by 29.5% to N714.4bn from N551.5bn in the previous quarter.

At the end of the second quarter of 2022, Nigeria’s imports stood at N5.44 trillion, while exports closed at N7.41 trillion. Accordingly, the import and export values grew by 50% and 80% from N3.57 trillion and N4.11 trillion earned in Q1 2020, just before the heat of the pandemic that led to total lockdown in almost all countries around the world. Trades have begun to grow now, although some windows of importation and exportation are still recovering from the hit that the pandemic brought.

According to BRIU's survey, Nigeria has had a significant number of building collapses during the past 12 and a half years, which have led to the loss of lives and livelihoods as well as the eviction of families. The nation is in first place in Africa for both the frequency and severity of building collapses, ahead of both Kenya and South Africa.
