COLONEL HAMEED ALI’S FIGHT TO RID THE NIGERIA CUSTOMS OF CORRUPTION
The recent
directive by the Comptroller-General (CG) of Customs, Colonel Hameed Ali, to
all officers and men of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to declare their
assets within 14 days may have jolted some officers but it is not new. We are
in the era of asset declaration as part of the fight against corruption. Men
and officers of the Customs had been asked in the past to declare their assets
in at least two occasions.

EXPLOSIVE OIL FIELDS OF NIGER DELTA
Recent bombings
of oil pipelines in the Niger Delta again raise the spectre of escalation of
conflicts in the region. While we cannot say the reasons for the incidents, it
does appear to be calculated acts of sabotage rather than mere vandalism.

CALLOUS, INSENSITIVE AND WICKED GOVERNORS AND THEIR NEW AIRPORT PROJECTS
The craze for state-owned
airports by some governors amid the economic hardship in the country shows not
only the level of insensitivity among the ruling class but poor capacity in
governance. Prioritisation seems to be alien to them, while they are at home
with profligacy. Talking of bogus airport projects when most states can’t meet
basic statutory responsibilities to their people is the worst display of
ego-tripping in power, visionlessness and even criminality. Certainly, the
governors cannot be working in the public interest but for themselves and their
cronies if the suffering masses who have no need for airports do not matter as
much as the few.

INAUGURATION OF LASU VICE CHANCELLOR IN GOVT HOUSE BY LAGOS STATE GOVERNOR
With the inauguration of Professor Olanrewaju Fagbohun as Vice

have put an end to the perennial management crisis in that institution.

THE CORRUPTION MINDSET OF NIGERIANS
Mainstream media
and the social media are awash with the news and discussions on the present
Federal Government’s fight against corruption. The justification for the fight
or otherwise, has pitched Nigerians against one another: those for and those
against, even if such opposition is veiled in one form of the criticism of the
government’s mode of leading the fight or another. One thing that became clear
in all these discussions is the level of our tolerance for corruption – the
corruption mindset of Nigerians.

2016 BUDGET AND ECONOMIC REVIVAL
All things
considered, the size of the N6.08 trillion 2016 federal budget for
2016 should be of little economic interest. Had the budget formulation,
presentation and appropriation followed the laid-down time schedule, the agreed
oil price benchmark would have been higher than the N38/barrel, thereby giving
a different budget size. But the projected volume of crude oil production
invites curiosity.

CRUCIAL FACTORS THAT WILL SHAPE POWER SECTOR IN 2016
It is not a
gainsaying that the nation’s power sector is on the right track to the
proverbial Promised Land going by the recent development on electricity supply.
However, the sector is still far away from its destination as several crucial
factors that hold the key to the industry’s growth are yet to be fixed or
strategically reviewed.

NAIRA DEVALUATION: IMPLICATION AND DANGER
Devaluation means
official lowering of the value of a country’s currency relative to
other foreign currencies. Currency depreciation refers to falling
exchange value of a currency for other foreign currencies as a result
of the forces of demand and supply which may be
temporary. Currency redenomination on the other hand means
changing the currency to a lower digital value due to its outrageous
falling exchange rate over time. In effect, it
means changing the face value of a highly devalued currency.

ON ELECTRICITY TARIFF
The hike in electricity tariff
against widespread opposition of Nigerians smacks of gross insensitivity on the
part of the authorities to the high level of poverty and suffering of
Nigerians. An albatross on Nigeria from which there seems to be no escape for
the people would seem to have been made heavier on their necks.

SANCTIONS FOR PUBLIC LOANS ABUSE
Three issues,
namely greater financial discipline, prudent expenditure and strict observance
of due process are among those thrown up by the recommendation of stiff
sanctions on government officials (especially state governors) who misapply
loans meant for overall improvement of the people’s living standards. Chairman
of the Senate Committee on Foreign and Domestic Loans, Senator Shehu Sani, who made the call the other day, is in good
stead to know the grave import of the arbitrary circumstances currently underlying
public loans procurement in the country; and the Debt Management Office (DMO),
to whom the advice was presented for onward transmission to government, is an
appropriate agency to transmit it.
