We find it
necessary to make the record straight in view of the fact that we are aware
that incorrect and untrue information regarding the number of lives lost during
the incident and the magnitude of the incident has been published and put in
public space, claiming over 100 lives were lost and over 200 people were
injured etc. We are also aware that pictures of disaster that had occurred
elsewhere and at a time have been posted on online news portals and blogs,
which created global media attention not only in relation to the accident but
also to our country, Nigeria.
As a
responsible organization, we state categorically and with all due respect to
families who lost their loved ones during the incident that 6 persons lost
their lives on that day and 4 persons later died in the hospital – 10 persons
in total contrary to the media reports. We consider it necessary to set the
record straight for record purposes.
We are
however grateful to His Excellency the Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, for his
involvement in immediately mobilizing emergency services to the site of the incident.
We are also
grateful to the Anambra State
