NIGERIA ELECTIONS UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT; HIGH-LEVEL US-CHINA TRADE TALKS IN FOCUS

Tomorrow will be a monumental day for the Nigerian economy, as the presidential elections get under way. Although there was initially a sense of uncertainty after the elections were abruptly postponed last week, this feeling could be washed away by a market-friendly outcome. It will be interesting to see where the Nigerian stock market and Naira trade on Monday.

NAIRA WEAKENS AFTER ELECTION POSTPONEMENT

The Naira weakened against the Dollar on the forward market today, following the sudden postponement of the Presidential and National Assembly elections over the weekend.  With the nation speculated to lose roughly $1 billion in GDP for postponing as result of this, the near-term economic outlook has gone sour.  However, it may be too early to jump to any conclusions over what impact this could have on sentiment and macro-economic conditions. The uncertainty from this development will certainly impact Nigerian stocks in the near term, with the All Share Index (ASI) already -1.61% lower as of writing.

DECREASED INFLATION FIGURES AND TOMORROW’S ELECTIONS.

In an unexpected development, Nigeria’s inflation has decreased to 11.37% in January despite increased government spending ahead of the Presidential elections. This news is a welcome development to the economy, especially when considering how election spending was seen stimulating economic growth at the cost of rising inflation. If inflationary pressures continue to ease, the Central Bank of Nigeria could be prompted to cut interest rates in a bid to stimulate growth by encouraging businesses to increase investments and consumers to borrow. The next major event risk for Nigeria will be the presidential elections tomorrow. While the outcome remains uncertain, it will certainly have a significant impact on Nigeria’s economic outlook.

IN-VITRO MATURATION (IVM)

In-Vitro Maturation, commonly known as IVM, is an Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) that involves collecting eggs from a woman before they are matured using hormonal injections. The eggs which are not yet mature are collected via a minor surgical procedure. Then, the premature eggs are matured in a culture using hormones. Eventually, the matured eggs are manually fertilized using a process called Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI). Once the embryos have time to begin development, they are transferred into the woman’s womb and the wait begins to see if pregnancy occurs.

CAN ONE REMAIN FERTILE AFTER CANCER TREATMENT?

There is no doubt that recent improvements in prevention, detection and treatment have led to improvement in cancer survival rates, especially in developed countries. One aspect of care that is still largely ignored in this clime is the issue of fertility preservation, i.e. steps put in place to ensure that a cancer survivor can still be able to have children after going through the experience.

ANXIETY IN THE FINANCIAL MARKETS

After a strong rally in risky assets since the beginning of 2019, anxiety and concerns over global economic growth have returned. This was evident in currency markets last week where inflows returned to the U.S. Dollar despite a dovish Fed. Equity markets in Europe hit a wall with the Stoxx 600 ending a five-week winning streak. Meanwhile, U.S. investors are becoming worried about fading profits and possibly an earnings recession.

NIGERIA GDP ON THE RADAR AHEAD OF PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS

It has been a positive trading week for the Nigerian stock market with the All Share Index pushing higher despite US-China trade talks pessimism denting global risk sentiment. Local equity markets are seen pushing higher next week if Nigeria’s GDP growth for Q4 exceeds market expectations. Away from macro fundamentals, the presidential elections will be in sharp focus. Whatever the election outcome, it will have a strong impact on the Nigerian economy.

Investor optimism over government spending boosting domestic growth continues to support appetite for risk in Nigeria with the All Share Index steady around 30,748.50 as of writing. A combination of bargain hunting and growth optimism are likely to push domestic stocks higher ahead of the presidential elections next week. Confidence over the health of the nation has the potential to receive another welcome boost if next week’s GDP figures for Q4 meet or exceed market expectations. While the outcome of the presidential elections remains highly uncertain, it will certainly have a lasting impact on the Nigerian economy.

DID THE FED MAKE A WRONG DECISION?

The U.S. Federal Reserve’s sharp U-turn last week has been welcomed by equity markets. The adjustment to guidance between December and January was enormous. After raising interest rates in December and hinting towards further gradual increases in interest rates while reducing the balance sheet on autopilot mode, the doves seem to have taken control.  The two rate hikes for 2019 are no longer on the table, and the balance sheet may be adjusted at any time.

WILL JANUARY’S US JOBS REPORT ADD TO THE DOLLAR’S WOES?

It has been another rough trading week for the Dollar as a ‘patient’ Federal Reserve fuelled speculation over a possible pause to US monetary tightening this year.

HOT TOPIC COMMENT ON NIGERIA'S PMI REPORT

The encouraging foreign exchange reserve figures and manufacturing data for January is a welcome development for Nigeria as it prepares for presidential elections in two weeks. Although the external reserves slightly eased to 43.16 USD Billion in January from 43.23 USD Billion in December of 2018, it was a major improvement when compared to the drop witnessed in October and November.
