MAN ADVISES CBN TO SUSTAIN CURRENT DIRECTIVE ON FOREX SALES

The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) on Friday advised the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to sustain its current directive on forex sales to rebound output by manufacturers. The President of MAN, Mr Frank Jacobs, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the advice became necessary because the directive would help in strengthening the naira for production purposes.

NAIRA SUSTAINS GAIN AS DOLLAR CRASHES AT PARALLEL MARKET

The Naira on Friday sustained its gains against the dollar as liquidity boost by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had forced a crash in the price of the greenback. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports in Lagos that the Naira exchanged at N460 to a dollar at the parallel market, gaining 40 points from N500 it recorded on Thursday. NAN also reports that the Pound Sterling and the Euro traded at N575 and N480 respectively.

The intense and justified desire of stakeholders to have uninterrupted electricity power recently received a shock from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), the regulator of the power sector when its Acting Chief Executive, Tony Akah, was quoted to have told members of the Senate Committee on Privatisation that without an increase in electricity tariff or a subsidy from the government, Nigeria would not be able to get steady power supply. He attempted a justification of his position by employing the now old-fashioned arguments of destruction of gas pipelines, huge cost being sustained by power companies, foreign exchange scarcity and fall in the rate of the local currency, Naira, lack of cost-effective tariff or subsidy or incentives that would induce the power companies to commit more money to the sector.
