AS A LAW PROFESSOR, I AM PAID N400,000 PER MONTH AND I SPEND N40,000 ON FUEL PER WEEK, PROF. JOY EZEILO SAYS

Professor Joy Ngozi Ezeilo
A Professor of Law at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka,
Professor Joy N. Ezeilo (OON), has spat fire concerning the constant degradation of the economy of Nigeria and fast-tracked sliding of millions of Nigerians into poverty level.

The erstwhile Enugu State Commissioner for Women Affairs took to Twitter to pour out her frustration on the way the country is headed.

In a tweet that has seven threads, she wrote, “Which way is Nigeria headed? I bought 50 litres of diesel for my car at the cost of N40, 000 in Enugu.  I’m wondering how we will all survive this hardship. As a Law Professor that has reached the last step and stage in promotion at a Federal University, I’m paid about 400,000 per month after taxes.

“So, if I spend forty thousand conservatively for fuelling my car on a weekly basis, that’s if I remain within my city times that by at least 200 litres per month it means 40 percent of my salary is spent  in fuelling. What about other utilities, electricity, water, rent, food, children’s school fees, medical, phone and internet etc. Cooking gas is up by over 200 percent? Do we resort to firewood?

“World Bank’s prediction that millions of Nigerians would be driven to the poverty level is real. We’re in troubled waters with crippling inflation!

“I dare ask what future for our dear children in a turbulent country like ours? I urge the political elites in particular as they jostle for power, which has become the swiftness means to become rich and important in Nigeria to deeply reflect and empathize with children- the future generations that would be impacted by their actions and decisions. Think about children’s future and act always in their best interests.”
